The first full week of minor league action is complete, and with it comes the first edition of MFR’s weekly recaps for each club. For now, it starts simple; as things progress and time allows, the recaps will get more detailed. For now, we start with what we have. Everything should be pretty self-explanitory; if not, ask in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer your questions.
Tacoma Rainiers (3-5)
Streak: Lost 1
Opponents: 4 @ Sacramento (OAK), 4 @ Fresno (SFG)
Notes:The Rainiers have gotten out of the gate slowly in 2011, with both the offense and pitching struggling to find any consistency or form. Hopefully the incentive of opening up their new ballpark this weekend will help encourage them to start turning things around.
Standouts: OF Carlos Peguero (.321/.406/.464, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 SB), OF Mike Wilson (.294/.400/.588, 1 HR, 2 2B), RHP Blake Beavan (2 GS, 10 IP, 1 W, 0.90 ERA, 8 K’s), RHP Chris Seddon (2 GS, 13 IP, 0 ER, 10 K’s)
Dunces: 3B Alex Liddi (.103/.182/.138), LHP Luke French (2 GS, 9 IP, 2 L, 8.00 ERA, 21 H, 2 HR), Chaz Roe (1 GS, 1.2 IP, 37.80 ERA)
Next Seven Days: 4 vs Sacramento, 3 vs Colorado Springs (COL)
Jackson Generals (3-4)
Streak: Lost 2
Opponents: 5 @ Mississippi (ATL), 2 vs Jacksonville (FLA)
Notes: With the exception of opening night, the Generals’ pitching staff has been good. The offense, however, has not, scoring just 19 runs in 7 games and getting shut out twice.
Standouts: 1B Rich Poythress (.917 OPS, 2 HR, 1 2B, 5 RBI), OF Jake Schaffer (.923 OPS, 4 2B, 1 RBI), RHP Kenn Kasparek (1 GS, 7 IP, 0 R, 3 H)
Dunces: C Brandon Bantz (.077/.143/.077), RHP Moises Hernandez (2 G, 2 IP, 13.50 ERA)
Next Seven Days: 3 vs Jacksonville, 4 @ Montgomery (TB)
High Desert Mavericks (4-4)
Streak: Won 1
Opponents: 4 @ Lancaster (HOU), 3 @ Inland Empire (LAA), 1 vs Lake Elsinore (SD)
Notes: The offense is starting to click after an opening night shutout, and the pitching hasn’t been bad at all considering the league. Nick Franklin missed a couple of days with a sore ankle, but has done well the last few games, with a triple and a homer to his name.
Standouts: DH Dennis Raben (.961 OPS, 2 HR, 3 2B, 7 RBI), 1B Vince Catricala (.898 OPS, 1 HR, 7 RBI), RHP Yoervis Medina (2 GS, 11 IP, 2.45 ERA, 8 K’s), LHP Nick Czyz (1 GS, 6 IP, 0 ER, 5 K’s)
Dunces: 2B Gabe Norieaga (.167/.167/.167, 4 H), OF James Jones (5 G, .000/.235/.000)
Next Seven Days: 2 vs Lake Elsinore, 4 vs Lancaster, 1 @ Lake Elsinore
Clinton LumberKings (2-6)
Streak: Won 1
Opponents: 4 vs Burlington (OAK), 4 @ Beloit (MIN)
Notes: The pitching has been mostly good, but the offense has been almost non-existent, registering only eight total extra base hits in as many games. However, there are too many hitters with talent for them to stay in that sort of slump for long.
Standouts: SS Marcus Littlewood (.370/.433/.370, 3 RBI), OF Kevin Rivers (.296/.345/.444, 1 HR, 3 RBI), RHP Forrest Snow (2 GS, 9 IP, 12 K’s, 0.83 WHIP)
Dunces: 3B Ramon Morla (.094/.121/.188, 13 K’s), 1B/OF Mickey Wiswall (.143/.226/.143, 12 K’s)
Next Seven Days: 3 vs Kane County (KC), 3 @ Cedar Rapids (LAA), 1 @ Kane County
All in all, a very inauspicious start for the Mariners’ system. There’s been some good performances, but there’s also been a lot of bad. Hopefully things improve quickly.
